About Kei’Phavian

Kei’Phavian is a serialized sequential art project written and illustrated by artist Charon Henning. It explores the concepts of birds in the role of the dominant species on the planet, and how humankind’s abilities to create community and connection through the tools of storytelling are covertly and expertly steered and nurtured by the avian world.

Based in both the positive and negative history that bids and humans have shared, Kei’Phavian explores the importance of creating strong and thriving connections for the benefit of all living things. It also takes on harder topics which, through the use of avian characters, are made more accessible to readers by providing a bit of distance from what they may believe to be true in their own world.

A love of vultures, corvids and birds of prey led Charon to begin this project, which was initially a way to encourage monthly bird illustration practice, but eventually became a work that deeply resonated with a small and dedicated fan base. A Patreon account is being set up to help support Kei’Phavian’s continued creation.

This site contains an archive of the first incarnation of Kei’Phavian and is home to the newly crafted re-release, slated to go public in September of 2018.

About the Artist

Charon Henning is a location independent scientific illustrator and sequential artist.

A member in good standing of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, Charon enjoys working in the areas of vertebrate paleontology, osteology and ornithology. Her science illustration specific website can be found at www.charonhenning.com.

She holds an Associate’s Degree in Fine Art from Prince George’s Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Individualized Studies: Multimedia Storytelling from George Mason University, where she earned the faculty award for Most Creative Capstone Project. Her storytelling education, as well as her love of birds and their ancestors, is reflected in Kei’Phavian.

Charon continues her education in sequential art and visual storytelling through the acquisition of books and advanced coursework on the subject. She is currently enrolled with The Sequential Artist’s Workshop and The Oatley Academy of Visual Storytelling.

She travels full time and lives on the road with her partner and a hairless cat named Brundlefly. A restored 1966 Airstream Overlander travel trailer serves as home, studio and sanctuary for the entire family. As a location independent artist, she is able to spend a great deal of time in nature, at museums and exploring the myriad wonders out in the world. Every opportunity to draw birds from life and to observe their characters and behaviors is welcomed, and she looks for such connections at every travel stop.
